Boys’ Varsity Water Polo Off to Fantastic Start

The Boys’ Varsity Water Polo team has enjoyed an incredible start to its 2022 season, as the Wild Boars are a perfect 3-0, including huge wins over Deerfield Academy and Suffield Academy.

To put things in perspective, Choate Rosemary Hall only had three total wins all of last season.

A big reason for the early success this year is having Choate Alum and Athletics Hall of Famer Katie Childs ‘95 back on the pool deck as the head coach of the team. However, she is quick to give credit to everyone involved with the program.

"Our program is fortunate to have two great assistant coaches,” she explained. “Todd Currie’s support and knowledge of the game is a valuable addition for the team. Jorge Rodriguez has been a mainstay with the Boys’ Water Polo program for many years now and the team is lucky to have him as well. His rapport with the student-athletes and his love of the program emanates to all who are around him.”

The Wild Boars are led by senior captains Sam Anastasio and Finn Lutton, and are joined by a strong junior and sophomore group who all played significant minutes last year in the varsity match ups. Chris Childs ‘24 traveled to California and was part of a Top-25 team in the U16 Junior Olympics. Garrett Curtis ‘24 will anchor in goal, and Choate will be getting some speed from Michael Xu ‘ 25, Tyler Kwee ‘24 and Daneel Polakoff ‘25.

In addition, Jackson Haught ‘24, Marco Alataris ‘25 and Antonio Giraldez Greco ‘25 return with experience and ability in the water that give player-depth that is unprecedented in the history of the program.

"With such a big group of student-athletes choosing to learn and play water polo, I am looking forward to working with all the players whether they are a novice or more experienced and challenging them to grow as players,” remarked Coach Childs. “We are looking to qualify for New England’s this year and have a strong showing while there. I would also love for the Choate community to come out on October 5th as we host Deerfield for another big matchup!”

Keep up the great work, boys’ water polo!
